The Leftovers

3-8: The Leftovers “The Book of Nora”

The Leftovers is over, but don’t worry Jessica and Dean are here to get you through it with the help of our loyal listeners who put forth many great comments on this episode and the series as a whole. Jessica and Dean are both high on this episode as it delivers on the premise put forth in season one: this is a series about the characters and their struggles post-departure more than it is about the “truth” of the departure. Another phenomenal acting display by both Theroux and Coon, and an unexpected appearance by Amy Brennemen. Was the appearance of Laurie good or bad for the story as a whole? Does it matter? All this and more on this week’s episode of, Sudden Departure: A Leftovers Podcast.

3-7: The Leftovers “The Most Powerful Man in the World”

The seventh episode reminds us all why we are still watching “The Leftovers.” It isn’t about the metaphorical religious stuff, but more because we are deeply invested in the characters. We are able to empathize with them, and we feel like we know them, or at least understand their human frailty. Kevin Garvey Jr., like most people, is a beautiful mess of flaws and surprising moments of virtue. It would be easy to overdue the “international assassin” device, but Lindelof has displayed patience and an innate awareness of perfect timing. He knows exactly when to send Kevin into the “Bizzaro World” for maximum effect. A triumphant episode that has Dean and Jessica feeling positive about next week’s finale.

3-6: The Leftovers “Certified”

Inexplicably, Jessica becomes a fan of Laurie this week… well not really, but she does have a lot of favorable things to say about this week’s episode as does her counterpart, Dean. The two agree that this series has always been about the characters and how they respond to the departure. Although both Dean, and Jessica can’t totally wrap their head around Laurie’s final decision, they do agree that it was a well constructed story arc for a complicated and deeply flawed character.

3-5: The Leftovers “It’s a Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt World”

Matt’s odyssey through indifferent friends and hedonistic lions puts him before “God” where he confronts the realities of his own faith. Was Matt serving himself with his faith? Jessica and Dean both agree that this was a better episode on a re-watch, but they are forced to ponder its placement with only three episodes remaining. Like many single-character episodes of the series “It’s a Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt World” is an excellent (and complete) story that could serve as a standalone episode outside of the larger narrative.

3-4: The Leftovers “G’Day Melbourne”

Things between Nora and Kevin finally come to a head and they go their separate ways. The split does highlight a couple of strengths of the show. First, it appears that Damon Lindelof has plans for Kevin and Nora and their individual stories. Pushing them in different directions shows confidence that both characters can hold their own — alone. Second, both Kevin and Nora need to face-down their own internal struggles without the interference of the other. They are more than two halves of a whole, but will they ever see each other again…? This week’s episode is another example of great performances, interesting story developments, and strong decision making by Damon Lindelof!

3-3: The Leftovers “Crazy Whitefella Thinking”

With “Crazy Whitefella Thinking” the acting bar – which was set high in the first season – continues to rise. Scott Glenn’s frantic and determined performance as Kevin Garvey Sr. continues to befuddle. Is he crazy or is he the most lucid person in the show? And how about that heart-breaking monologue by Grace Playford (Lindsay Duncan) at the end of the episode? Has Nora met her match in the tragedy department? Jessica and Dean are not exactly sure, but both agree that this week’s installment was excellent television.
